Other Information
 
After the organization of the civil government the whole Banaba was headed by a "Teniente de Barrio". Due to rapid explosion of population this barrio was divided into four distinct groups such as Banaba ibaba, Banaba Silangan, Banaba Gitna, and Banaba Kanluran. Each has its own barrio government under a captain with six members of the board. This school lies in the territorial boundary of Banaba West, so that I shall dwell only on the historical and cultural data of this barrio.
 
The present official name of this barrio is Banaba Kanluran being strategically located in the Western part of Banaba. The name was derived from Banaba Tree which bears purple of Banaba. The name was derived from Banaba Tree which bears purple flowers with bread leaves good for kidney trouble. It was three sitios namely: Balimbing, Manggahan and kanlurang Karsada.

During the Commonwealth Government this barrio was separated from Banaba Silangan and Banaba Ibaba. Among the original families were: the family of Mr. and Mrs. Valentin Macatangay, Mr. and Mrs. Leodivico Clarete,, Mr. and Mrs. Agusto Paglicauan, Mr. and Mrs. Ramon Mendoza etc.

HOW BANABA GOT ITS NAME

When our town was occupied by the Spaniards there were two Spanish Civil Guards who reached this place. They went under a tree. The civil guards asked for the name of the place in their own language. Readily the two answered “Banaba” thinking that they were asking for the name of the tree where they were resting.

From that time on the place was called “Banaba” from that medicinal tree where the Civil Guards and the couple rested to escape from the intense heat of the sun.

 Except for the establishment of the first school in the whole Banaba not much is heard about the historical sites, structures and old ruins. The people are generally industrious. They are engaged to farm work and animal raising. Men tamed fighting cocks and transport them as far as Mindanao and Batanes. This becomes a good source of income for most of the families of this barrio.
 
During the Japanese time the farmers were made to harvest their palay even if they are not ready for harvest just to give way to cotton planting. This was done under compulsion. If one disobeys the order of “Nagata” the Japanese inspector, one was tied to a post for non-compliance to the order.

The school was opened only to propagandized the Japanese mighty power. People suffered very much because all means of communications were cut and the products raised by the people were consumed only within the community for fear of Japanese atrocities.

Today the people are looking forward for the economic, social and political upliftment, thru self-help.
