Athletics and Classic win in the start of the quarterfinals of Maharlika league

BATANGAS CITY-Batangas City Tanduay Athletics and Valenzuela Classic emeged victorious on Tuesday night, opening up their quarterfinal bid in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum.

Inspired by the crowd’s show of support, the Athletics controlled the game early on behind their unrelenting drive on the way to a wire-to-wire 88-75 victory over the visiting Bataan Defenders.

Moncrief Rogado was the player of the game with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while veteran Lester Alvarez added 8 points, three rebounds and season high 14 assists for Batangas, leading to several 30-point leads. Home grown star Marvin Macalalad also contributed for Batangas with his 4 points coming off the bench.

Defenders gunner Gary David finished with a team high 18 points on top of six rebounds and two assists but was forced to make several turn-overs by the strong Athletics defense.

Meanwhile, Roderick Acidre came up with 21 points, together with 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals as the Classics turned back Quezon City Capitals, 96-89.

Point Guard Krentz Carlos put in 12 points, 4 rebounds, two assists while 3 other players scored in double digits for the Classics.

Big man Jessie James Collado made 19 points while Jason Santos added 14 points in a losing game for the Capitals, who dropped to 0-1 in the quarters. (PIO Batangas City)
